Some time ago I came across a thread where it was about the best Familiar for a wizard of Hummingbirds. These were Dungeon Magazine 323 published and use the statistics of the Thrush Familiars (Dungeon Master's Guide p. 203), but give the owner a +4 bonus to initiative. This is schonmal quite nice.
Now it is perhaps an elf, because the look on the good as a wizard. As you look into Races of the Wild p. 157 and select Level 3 for the offered substitution level, which doubled the bonus of the Familiars. +8 Is the initiative ... enormously to third level At low levels, a decision Encounter still not as pronounced in the first round as the between level 15-20 of case, but instead of acting to be treated is always good.
you now may Improved Initiative chosen as a feat (+4 to initiative), it is * in an average of over 50% of Encounter first, even before they ever rolled. Cool.
